4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
Artifact: Web 2.0 Tools to Support Education
Reflection:
I created the Web 2.0 Tools to Support Education blog post in ITEC 7430, Internet Tools in the Classroom. For the blog post, I had to research different digital tools and how they could be used to support diverse student needs. I made a video presentation to summarize what I learned and teach others. The blog post demonstrates my ability to determine what digital tools and resources will support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.
In the artifact, I identify many tools I use in the classroom and the opportunity for personalization. I modeled and facilitated the use of digital tools and resources outlining tools approved in Cherokee County, ways to have students use the tools, and how to support diverse student needs with the tools. I also used digital tools to enhance cultural understanding by requiring students to create videos to share for teaching and critiquing. The videos allowed students to see how their peers made sense of the same information and enhanced their understanding of the content—seeing responses from culturally diverse students increased the global awareness of each student. Students of diverse backgrounds would use life examples different from their peers. A safe environment was created for students to present their knowledge and cultural background.
I learned that simply picking a tool and using it does not mean you will be able to meet diverse student needs. A teacher must have a planned purpose for the tool to be successful. For example, having students record themselves, submit, and move on does not work. A teacher needs to provide guidance, scaffolds, and a way to share for the tool to support diverse needs, be culturally understandable and increase global awareness. If I redid this assignment, I would ask a student to participate in it and ask about how the digital tool supports the student's needs.
I shared the article I mentioned, Bloomin' Apps - Kathy Schrock's Guide to Everything, in PLC. My PLC identified tools to use in lessons from the article. By creating this artifact, my PLC has felt the impact of having more tools and knowing what level of achievement each supports. My PLC can measure the success of this artifact by measuring the increased achievement the students have.
